Pope says yes to LGBT civil unions - 2nd November 2020

Pope Francis has said LGBT couples should be allowed civil unions. Civil unions are similar to marriage. LGBT marriages and civil unions aren’t allowed in many countries. Some other countries only allow civil unions. Pope Francis is the head of the Catholic church. Traditionally, the Catholic church hasn't welcomed LGBT people. It has been against civil unions. The pope’s comments have surprised some people.

Pope Francis made the comments in a new film, which was shown at the Rome film festival. He said LGBT people "have a right to a family".

The film, 'Francesco', is about the life and work of Pope Francis. It tells the story of the 7 years he has been pope. It shows issues which are important to him, such as equality and the environment.

Since he became pope in 2013, Francis has been more open to LGBT people. But this is the first time he has spoken about civil unions as pope.

The film also shows Francis speaking to a gay couple. He asks them to come to church with their children.

Evgeny Afineevsky is the film's director. He would like lots of people to see the film. He thinks it's important that people hear Pope Francis' words.
