Brexit leaves UK out of EU - 6th January 2021 view all

New Year 2021 was a big day for Europe. The UK is now outside the European Union.

In 2016, British people chose to leave the EU. They call this Brexit.

Then, the UK government talked to the EU. They had to agree how to leave.

Some big problems were about work and business. Finally, they made a deal. The deal is good for business. Products won’t have extra taxes on them.

But products have extra checks at ports and airports. These cost businesses money. They take extra time too. On the first day, there were no problems at UK or EU ports.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson says Brexit is a good thing.

Travel to and from Britain is different too. Now, British people can’t stay a long time in the EU. EU travel to the UK changed too. There will be extra waiting.

Another problem was Gibraltar. Gibraltar is British, but it is next to Spain. Gibraltar joined Europe’s travel zone.

This week, businesses start again. We will find out what problems there are. view less
